SUPPORT

Our current mission is to establish our own after school centers or "DENS" around the DC area.   There is a lack of after school programs and recreation facilities in the District of Columbia.  Since 2009, two of the eleven Boys and Girls Clubs located in Washington, DC have closed and during this same period, 23 District schools have closed; limiting sports programs in many neighborhoods and narrowing the availability of after school programs. According to the DC Action for Children 2012 eDatabook, nearly 4,000 children in DC live in neighborhoods with no recreation facilities whatsoever.

At our program locations we will offer a variety of services to our youths including:

  • Tutoring
  • Sport & Exercise Activities
  • Life Skills Training

WOLF PACK DENS

Access to after school programming is just as important as availability.  The establishment of our Wolf Pack Dens will not happen overnight.  Until that time, we will need to be able to shuttle youths who want to participate in our programs to the areas where these programs are taking safe.  Rather than have them rely on public transportation or their parents who may or many be able to provide a ride for them, we aim to purchase a bus or "sled" so that we can widen the reach of our program and provide service to youths from across the city.     The "sled" will also enable us to take the student on excursions outside of the DC Metro Area for hiking trips, college tours and other activities.

WOLF PACK SLEDS

JEFF BROWN NATATORIUM

One of our long-term goals is to build a swim center in DC.  A swimmer since the age of six and a lifelong athlete, WPL Founder, Jeff Brown, credits swimming with saving his life. Growing up in one of DC's most dangerous neighborhoods, Jeff found a safe place at the pool and an outlet in swimming. The sport taught him self-discipline, focus and self-reliance. It also helped him stay in shape and encouraged him to take pride in himself and his body. It built his self-esteem and also created opportunities for him to travel the world.

The statistics are very disheartening a recent study by the USA Swimming Foundation found that 70% of African American children and 58% of Hispanic children have little or no swimming ability.  The major factor in a child’s inability to swim comes from their parents. In a family in which neither parent swim 91% of African American children and 70% of Latino children will never learn to swim.  We believe these are numbers we can change with the establishment of the Jeff Brown Natatorium.  Programming at the Jeff Brown Natatorium will focus on encouraging minorities of all ages to take the plunge, get moving, and learn to swim.
